Meet a Jew, a project of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, introduces Jews and Judaism to non-Jewish people throughout the country. Over 300 volunteers visit schools, universities, sports clubs and other groups where they talk about themselves, their Jewish identity and answer questions about Jewish life in Germany today.
Since Jews constitute just 0.2% of Germany's population, the majority of people lack personal interactions with them, meaning their understanding isn't grounded in firsthand experience. Face-to-face meetings with Jewish individuals aid in dispelling stereotypes, substituting them with genuine encounters. The volunteers promote conversations where individuals feel comfortable inquiring about Judaism and Jewish life. The objective is not to educate about Judaism, but to offer direct, personal interactions with Jewish individuals. These positive encounters frequently leave a lasting impact.
The project receives support from the “Living Democracy!” initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
